An Early Birthday Present! Easy Labor

By Allison

It all began on June 21, 1999. I had been experiencing some pains in my back and assumed that it was the natural pains of being pregnant. I had not a clue that it was back labor being that it was my first pregnancy. I went walking to the local mall with my mother and they eventually increased. I came home and slept for a while but my back kept on hurting me. My fiance' kept telling me to relax and that is what to be expected.. silly man. Little did he know that in less than 48 hours he was to be an official daddy. He asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital but I declined since my regular doctor's appointment was the next day. I woke up the next morning with the same feeling.. more pain. I decided I was not going to do my laundry as I had originally planned and went back to sleep. About 2 hours later I woke up and prepared myself to go to the doctor.

Upon arriving to my OB/GYN, after examination she happily informed me that I was 4 centimeters... I then proceeded to laugh in her face. No lie!!! I was in utter shock. I thought your water was to break... it didn't... or I was to see a bloody show... which I didn't see. She informed me that I was to go to the doctor or home. Being scared out of my wits I chose the easy route -- HOME. At around 6:30 p.m., my fiance was on the phone when I encountered a really bad contraction. The only one to have consciously until about 5 hours later. We then decided to go to the hospital. Upon arrival, they failed to believe that I was having a baby. I guess I was too calm. I waddled myself to the room and they hooked me up to a fetal monitor. I then fell asleep and woke up when they tried to admit another patient. I guess I didn't sound pregnant enough for them... LOL.

They soon examined me and found that I was going to be kept. I was then 5 and a half centimeters. They got me to a room and my good friend, mother and fiance was there. No one in the labor & delivery ward believed that I was pregnant, or at least ready to deliver. I was so calm... that is until they decided to give me Pitocin at 11:45 p.m. because I was stuck at 9 centimeters. I was fairly relaxed -- singing songs to the baby and entertaining those around me. At around 12:30 a.m. on June 22, I was in bad pain. I wanted to kill everyone around me. It became very painful, but not soon after I had my baby -- a son, Matthew Jason Elijah, at 1:45 a.m. on June 23, 1999. He weighed in at 6 pounds, 15 ounces and 18 inches long. He couldn't wait until my birthday the next day... June 24. He is the best present I ever got and I hate surprises, but no one knew he would have come so early. He is 2 months now and a blessing to his daddy and I.
