Short Labor, BIG Baby

By Twila Ross

Kaylee Rachelle Ross

This is my fourth daughter, Kaylee's birth story. I woke on December 24 around 7 a.m. to a sharp pain in my back and it spread all though my stomach. I woke Patrick, my husband, of eight years. I timed the contractions and they became five minutes apart. We called our doula, Michelle, and her assistant who is my sister, Leigh. They arrived Christmas Eve around 8 a.m. They contractions were getting closer and I had Patrick take Dylan, Shane and Leslie over to my mom's. He came back around 8:30 a.m.

The contractions were getting worse and Michelle put warm rice socks on my back as I leaned over the birthing ball. I moved back onto the bed then onto the birthing ball again. Patrick went and called Sheri, my best friend, and she came over about 9:15 a.m. She walked in the door and I let out a long loud scream. It made Patrick's ears hurt; that he told me later. She held my hand and put on some music as Leigh and Michelle helped me breathe and tried to get me to focus. Sometime between 9:45 and 10 a.m. they got worse until I was checked about 10:10 a.m. and I was officially 10 centimeters and 100 percent effaced.

I laid down on our pallet that we made for me. Then it was push time, I took a deep breath and screamed as Kaylee's head moved down and then at 11:15 a.m. four hours and 15 minutes after I went into labor my fourth child came into the world. Kaylee Rachelle Ross was 8 pounds 11.5 ounces, and 21 inches long. She had deep blue eyes, and a perfect nose and a head of light blonde wisps of hair. She was born Christmas Eve.

Today she is 2 years old and her brother Michael was born in May.
